In addition, practical definitions are an obstacle to neutral knowledge and an obstacle to material relativism. In this article, with the analytical-critical method, while examining the theoretical definitions, the possibility and the necessity of providing practical definitions and their functions have been explained and analyzed. تعریف رایج منطق‌دانان که در شناخت اشیا، حدّ تام، حدّ ناقص، رسم تام و رسم ناقص، مورد ملاحظه قرار می‌گیرد و بیشتر به دنبال تبیین علیت مفهومی است، حاصلی جز تعاریف کلی و نظری ندارد و دارای کاستی‌های جدی نظیر نادیده انگاشتن اوصاف غیردائمی در تغییر هویت کیفیت، و تطبیق‌ناپذیری تعاریف نظری بر عینیت می‌باشد، اما از آنجا که تعاریف باید به اهمیت «شدن» و «تغییر» در عالم هستی توجه داشته باشند، لذا تعاریف کاربردی که قابلیت توجه به دو مقوله مذکور را دارا هستند و ضمن ملاحظه‌ زمان‌مندی و مکان‌مندی اشیا می‌توانند چگونگی شدنِ آن‌ها را تبیین نمایند و متناسب با جهت مورد نظر برای توسعه‌ یک پدیده، امکان دخل و تصرف در آن را فراهم کنند، راهگشا خواهند بود. به علاوه تعاریف کاربردی، سد راه دانش خنثی و مانع نسبیت‌گرایی مادی هستند. در این مقاله با روش تحلیلی-انتقادی، ضمن بررسی تعاریف نظری، امکان و بلکه ضرورت ارائه تعاریف کاربردی و کارکردهای آن تبیین و تحلیل شده است.
